Divide & Rule…

The British when reigned India understood an Indian’s mindset better than we do even today (or are we still in a denial mode). The game plans to keep their power intact for close to 200 years was simple ‘divide & rule’ and they proved it by creating Pakistan before we got our freedom. We should have known it then; that it was actually a hint that it’s easy to instigate an emotionally charged Indian to fight against each other. We may unite on the global platform but when it comes to our home no other nation could be split in so many sections; based on caste, communities, religion, sects and all the blah…
Post Independence a major divide within the country happened when Punjab (then Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and present Punjab) were one state. But due to an uprising lead by the Sikh political leaders for a separate state based on religion and language, new states were carved out in 1966. Chandigarh became a UT and a capital for two states.
Giving in demands of various political reasons and pressures Chattisgharh (MP), Uttrakhand (UP), Jharkhand (Bihar) were created in 2000. Now a resolution for Telengana as a separate state has been passed and the issue is still burning on who will get Hyderabad!
I wonder…
- Does all this help in development of India as a Nation or we are further weakening our roots since we are using our culture as tool for division?
- Will the power hungry politicians after getting share of the pie do something for those who don’t know even understand why there is a fight over boundaries within their own country?
- Will the number of farmer suicides in AP go down after Telengana becomes a separate state?
Ever thought what encourages an outsider like China claim share over Arunachal or Pak who forever has been dreaming of calling Kashmir as their own? The answer is simple if people within the country can fight over boundaries and demand new states then why won’t a third nation want to take advantage of our weakness?
Every Indian does not even get two square meals a day, education and medical aid for all is a distant dream. Wake up people, its India for Indians we are talking about here! Divide India based on prosperity and not the language we speak. We are an independent nation but a long way to go before we actually free ourselves from the politically motivated game of chess. The next move, Mayawati’s hand has already gone up; for creating Purvanchal, another state out of UP.
In the future I can see making of mayhem over our National Anthem because a particular state is not a part of it. Fast unto death till the lyrics are not edited, they will propose…

I dont know and hence dont want to comment on the politics behind dividing the states. But I believe smaller regions are easier to manage. Moreover it is quite evident that the injustice done on the so called backward regions has grown out of hands. I know the plight of Vidarbha region in Maharashtra. Because I have witnessed the growth potential as well as the apathy shown by Mumbai.

I think I will begin a fast unto death after my exams are over. My demand: My house should be given the status of a provice if not a state or a UT.

That is an immature comment Patty. I’m sorry for being blunt. But the problems indeed exist, the major ones being apathy by central administration. And one primary way is to divide the large regions. Smaller the areas, better the growth

Mayur I agree with you…. It is a very serious issue and we cannot just make mockery out of it.. If the states are being divided into smaller regions for better development and growth it is a need but thats not why new states are being created…
Did you read the paper today some local politician is now taking out big rallys and organizing bandhs and demanding Bundelkhand to be made as separate state.. This is the sad part…

I am glad that every alternate blog I read, got a post regarding this topic. Though no one said about the positive side.
Smaller state actually results in good government and good use of resources. But the political scenario in India won’t let it happen. They are making smaller state for their selfish purpose. Otherwise I am for the smaller states.

@ Guttu: ( read mayur’s comments) we exactly debated the point raised by you..
If the states are being marked out into smaller regions for development and growth then no one will raise a question.. But because the division is being demanded based on everything but the growth probability…
Those asking for separate states what have they done otherwise for the ones who need to be uplifted? How do they justify a need for a new state…
For example, has Jharkhand done any better than it was earlier- marginally.. Apart from being in news thanks to Koda who made God Knows how many crores and took on B-grade actresses for canvassing I don’t see much action happening!

I know a matter for few years and we will have everything new/changed thanks to these politicians who otherwise are good for nothing ( majority); to begin with we will have a new map for our country!!

Are we the democratic joke? I wonder….!! Is it not the struggle of power (and the money which follows) or is it something else.
I would like to wonder if there is any links to destabilise the AP government and linking with the Mining Czars, Reddy brothers !! Is it all what comes to eye or I am the one being paranoid…and speculative.
Ofcourse, once the shout of Telangana was heard, every other state wanted his or own too. The Gorkhaland, and the tri-UP Mayawati…and many more….!!
Oops…I want to have my own control….let me be declared as a seperate state or country for that matter… It sure will be fun…!! Will it not !!

Sensible post. Unfortunately, sense isn’t what drives politics or bigotry. Most times, people don’t know what they will achieve with a free state. They have to know that the identity of a large nation helps them, otherwise, they will root for individuality.

good one! by creating another state, the common man neither gain a penny nor lose one. The ground reality in Telangana case is KCR’s dream to become CM will never fulfill untill a new state is carved out. and i dont see anyone else gaining by doing so..
